ABOUT

This selection of Gábor Palotai’s artworks put on show his open-ended body of work dedicated to different themes and topics. Spanning over four decades, his oeuvre embraces a multitude of media and motifs. Working across genres, often with a mixed media process, Gábor Palotai transgress the Platon-Kantian dogma of the pure aesthetic of art and everyday function of design. Realizing art in different media, he incorporates the Duchamp-Warholian design of art in the expanded field of contemporary aesthetics and presents his unique points of view.

The allegorical impulse beats through Gábor Palotai’s body of art, running across several, sometimes antagonizing, movements in design and art history and always ending up showcasing a world of his own. Starting off in the late 1970s with his conceptual photography and fluxus art, early modern collage and late modern grid-based projects, postminimalism and postmodern computer art, continuing with experimental film, new media art, and excelling in creative deconstruction beyond postcontemporary reconstructions. His free-spirited movement forward has, despite different media and motifs, given his works a recognizable aesthetic energy characterized by the bold and intense, poetic and passionate.

Paintings, carpets, print on paper, porcelain, textile, artist’s books, films – are some of the more classical mediums with which Gábor Palotai aligns his new media art. At his solo exhibition “ODYSSEUS” at Röhsska Museum, Gothenburg, for instance, copies of his artist’s book Odysseus: A Graphic Design Novel was arranged as a sculptural piece running along the exhibition hall, while his film Odysseus was displayed on the walls. This exhibition also took place at another less conventional place, a night club in Stockholm, where the film was shown as a parallel exhibition. Another example of his use of mixed media in alignment, is his exhibition “AM MU NA HI” at the Hungarian House of Photography, Budapest, showcasing large format excerpts of his computer manipulated photographs from his artist book AM MU NA HI. Lately, his solo exhibition “ZOO-LANDSCAPES-COSMOS” at Trafó House of Contemporary Arts, Budapest, excelled in aligning mixed media and put on display different topics and motifs from a decade exploring visual existentialisms through the pixel.

What began as a visual study of the pixel, has by now transcended into an extensive pattern production that lay the foundation of his expansive private archive of patterns. These different patterns have in their turn laid the ground for several of his distinct art projects.

An outline for a new digital Landscape art has resulted in the artworks “Possible Landscapes”. Inspired by Vilém Flusser’s "The swarm of pixels is indescribable", Gábor Palotai created his artworks “Un/readable Patterns”, realized in different media, from porcelain to textile. Recently, Gábor Palotai has made a study devoted to visualizing void with color with his “Pixel Paintings”. These are monochrome paintings on wood with a carved motif, consisting of an enlarged detail of a pixel from his pixel-pattern series.
